I tend to name characters after obvious things like color of hair or magical power. I am also Japanese so I know it.

Latin is just pretty in general, I think... pity it's a dead language, learning it would be so useful for learning French and Spanish since my first (and only) language is English. Unfortunately, I'd feel really dumb learning something no one speaks anymore.
